WAR OF THE WORLDS - TV SERIES - "THE WALLS OF JERICHO" |
|
Season 1 Broadcast: 10-Oct-1988 Written By: Forrest Van Buren Director: Colin Chilvers
The team struggles to convince Ironhorse and General Wilson that the aliens are still a threat, even after the destruction seen last episode. The aliens are, in fact, still alive, but may not be so for long; the radiation that killed the deadly bacteria is slowly destroying their human host bodies.
The title of this episode refers either in part to the town of Jericho where the aliens obtain the liquid nitrogen they need or the Fort Jericho dumpsite where the aliens were first revived. This episode marks the debut of three reoccurring elements for the series: – The Advocacy begin wearing their radiation-protective suits which mask them and leave them virtually faceless through out the season. Although said in another incarnation before, this is the first true utterance of the aliens' motto "To Life Immortal." – We also hear the controversial "selective-amnesia" theory which is used to explain the world's apparent loss of memory of the original invasion.
This is 1 of 3 scripts written under a pen-name. The writer's name is an amalgamation of Sylvia Van Buren and Clayton Forrester. Notice in the episode the alien's dissolved body (electrocuted on the fence) they show just before it cuts to Norton is actually the same shot of alien remains from "The Resurrection", only with the light darkened to make it appear as if it were night. This is the first time (of many) in the season in which footage is recycled from a previous episode. According to Norton's comment (and assuming he isn't just making a joke), he has five siblings. This is the last appearance of General Wilson in the series, though he is constantly referred to throughout, even into the second season (where at which point he has gone missing).
As of this episode, Debi is 11. She tells Wilson that she'll be 12 next month. Since she's still 11 in "Eye for an Eye", this makes her birthday somewhere in November, and that this episode takes place in October. And since the events of this episode occur six weeks following "The Resurrection", this would most likely put the aliens' Awakening in September.
