INVADERS FROM HOLLYWOOD

Spielberg's motion picture of H. G. Wells' "War of the Worlds," the 19th-century story of a martians' attack, turned into a nerve-wracking radio show by Orson Welles in 1938, has area fans in high anticipation. That includes Julie Scully, a Howell resident whose home is in the development where the "War of the Worlds" production team filmed last November. Scully, the mother of two, and her husband, Shawn, plan to see the movie at least once. She's a Cruise fan, to boot. "I got within two arms-lengths' of him (Cruise). He has a great smile and he was very nice to everybody," said Scully of the actor during a break from filming.  Click here for the full story.

WAR AIMS FOR REALITY

Rick Carter, production designer for Steven Spielberg's upcoming War of the Worlds movie, told SCI FI Wire that the movie aims for a hyper-realistic look and feel for its fantastical events, based on the novel by H.G. Wells. "The idea of this version of War of the Worlds is that it really takes place in our world," Carter said in an interview at WonderCon in San Francisco.

The film begins in New Jersey, where star Tom Cruise's character is a dockworker. The choice of location is in part an homage to Orson Welles, the director whose 1938 Halloween radio production of War of the Worlds set off a national panic.  FULL STORY HERE.

ALIENS FAITHFUL TO WELLS

Doug Chiang, the conceptual artist on Spielberg's upcoming War of the Worlds, told SCI-FI Wire that he relied heavily on the detailed descriptions in H.G. Wells' original book for the look and feel of the film's aliens and tripod war machines. "As much as we could, yeah," Chiang (Star Wars: Episode II) said in an interview at WonderCon in San Francisco last weekend. "I mean, we wanted to be faithful to it, because ... we think it's best to go to the source material versus other interpretations, as great as the other interpretations may have been. It's always nice to see where the inspiration came from. And then Steven, of course, takes it to a whole new level." FULL STORY

Wells' novel about an invasion from outer space, lost a few extras in the Connecticut River last weekend. Two adult-size mannequins got free and drifted south down the river during filming on the riverbank in Windsor, said Windsor police Lt. Shannon Haynes.

SPIELBERG MUST FIGHT
'WAR' FAST

Can Martian invaders destroy New Jersey and New York on schedule and within budget? Hollywood's about to find out.  The problem is simple - Spielberg's contempo version of a Martian invasion is supposed to be in theatres on June 29, less than eight months after the Nov. 7 start of lensing. That's a fast turnaround for any production, much less a summer tentpole containing 500 f/x shots. Spielberg's plan for the 75-day shoot is to shoot the big action segments first, such as a segment in early December with 1,000 extras in Athens, N.Y.

He began submitting sequences to special effects giant ILM during the second week; by the time production wraps, ILM will either have finished or be working on at least half the f/x shots.      Paramount and DreamWorks are co-financing what's been announced as a $128 million budget...click here for full story

Scenes for the Martian-invasion film "War of the Worlds," directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, will be filmed in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, according to an area tourism official. Jean Clark, tourism director for the Rockbridge County area, said she does not know exactly when or where the movie will be shot in the valley. But, "I know they're shooting something," she said. Clark expects filming in the area will wrap up before the year's end.

WOTW PRODUCTION UPDATE

Director Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise started shooting their adaptation of H.G. Well's The War of the Worlds in Newark, New Jersey on Sunday and a few pictures from the set have turned up online. The Paramount/DreamWorks sci-fi actioner, also starring Tim Robbins, Miranda Otto, and Dakota Fanning, is due out June 29. You can view the pictures here, here, and here!

The
Saratogian also reports that 1000 extras are needed for next month's shoot in Athens on the Hudson River.

Filming will take place Dec. 6-9 in Athens, about 25 miles south of Albany, on the Hudson River. A casting call for extras will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday at the Athens Community Centre. Most filming is taking place in metropolitan New York. One scene requires a waterfront setting where people flee onto a ferry trying to escape invading aliens.

'They're bringing in a 168-foot ferry,' Smallwood said. 'People will run down Second Street onto the boat.' 'The scenes are at night. It will be cold.' Filming will begin at 3 p.m. each day and last well into the night.

On Nov. 15, about 20 pre-production people will start preparing the site for shooting. During filming, about 200 production people will be on hand, not counting extras. Movie companies have been known to pay property owners considerable sums for letting them set up lights and make minor exterior changes to homes.

For the full article, hit the link above. Cruise has previously said that this new version is "going to be exciting, it's going to be really scary, and it's going to maintain the tone of H.G. Wells' book. These guys are coming to dominate Earth."

CRUISE REVEALS SCENE

Zap2it attended a public interview with Tom Cruise at UCLA sponsored by the American Film Institute and the Collateral star revealed which scene he shot that morning for Steven Spielberg's The War of the Worlds. "He says he was doing an emotional scene with Justin Chatwin, an estranged father in the middle of a Martian invasion of Earth," according to the site. Cruise explains, "As I was looking at a photograph I found of my son in the scene, Steven told me to think of the good times I had with my own son, and to get into the mood that way. Things like that really help."

The Star-Ledger says it's been confirmed that director Steven Spielberg will film parts of Tom Cruise-starrer The War of the Worlds in New Jersey.

What is known so far: Both Ferry Street in Newark and Kennedy Boulevard in Bayonne will see filming take place there, likely in November.

'In Newark, they've been in the Ironbound section, at the area called Five Corners on Ferry Street," Friedman says. 'They've been in there talking to all the store keepers, and they've got quite a lot of money in their budget to compensate them for shutting down during filming. They've even opened up a temporary production office in the Ironbound."

And in Bayonne, the production has secured permission to build a gasoline station on a Little League ball field off Kennedy Boulevard -- and then blow it up. There is also a private home in Howell that the production has selected as a film location.

WAR OF THE WORLDS

Newcomer Justin Chatwin is in talks for a coveted role opposite Tom Cruise in Steven Spielberg's The War of the Worlds, an adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic novel for Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks. The Hollywood Reporter says Chatwin beat out several young actors for the part, which casts him as the son of Tom Cruise's character. Their strained relationship is reportedly a significant plot point in the film. Tim Robbins will play astronomer Ogilvy, while Miranda Otto will play the wife of the main character played by Cruise. Dakota Fanning will portray their daughter. Chatwin starred in Spielberg's mini-series Taken in 2002.

NEW JERSEY BENEFITS FROM ‘WAR’ CHEST

The “War of the Worlds” production, through Paramount Pictures, is about to put a nice bit of change into the pockets of the city of Bayonne, New Jersey (where the production will be on location shooting in the next month or so—see our September 17 news).

Nj.com reported that Paramount will be paying Bayonne nearly $285,000 to rent facilities in a decommissioned military base between September 13-January 12, 2005. The Military Ocean Terminal facilities will be used “primarily as storage for equipment” while the production shoots around Bayonne in various homes and residential areas.

Buildings on the 679 acre Military Ocean Terminal will also be utilized for sound-stage usage during the productions time in New Jersey, according to nj.com. The base was closed down in 2001 due to chemical contamination which has since obviously been contained.
